About the Munch Museum's Collection

The volume of Munch’s texts is estimated at about 13,000 pages and consists of everything from literary journals, letters and drafts of letters to exhibition lists and notes. The Munch Museum owns ca. 90% of the material.

The signatures in the collection are called inventory numbers, and a number starts with the letters “MM” (Munch Museum) followed by one or two additional letters:

• MM M is for objects that are paintings (appear only as illustrations in the digital archive)
• MM G is for objects that are graphic artworks
• MM T is for objects that are sketch books and/or note books
• MM UT is for objects that were published by Munch or in his life time
• MM N is for all other text objects
• PN is for objects not owned by the Munch Museum
