Literary sketch. Summer night –

MM N 630, p. 1

Summer night –

The forest is silent and stifling and dark
– the tree trunks stand side by side like slender
columns – Down there amidst the grass a
large reptile – with long arms – lurks

but there on the other side in between the tree trunks the
summer night is illuminated
– the stones lie like white teeth
along the shore – out there in the
water hundreds of creatures
crawl – black – wet – they move – straining
their heads forward – reaching with their arms forward –
they swim one behind the other –

How hushed and inaudibly – the ocean breathes
– it surges aims a long
gentle wave at the shore – languidly
languidly – it is so weary –

There it breaks against the boulder –
breathing – it moves along the length of the
shore –

There is a mermaid over there in the [reflected] column of the moon
she gazes at the moon large and round
suspended over the horizon –

MM N 630, p. 2

she rocks herself in the column of the moon
and has golden tresses –

weak and tired she lies back
and the golden tresses
float on the water

    – Your eyes are large – as large as
half the sky when you stand so
close to me – and your hair like
gold dust

Your mouth I do not see – only
that you are smiling –
